Vinh

Arrived 18/07/2011

Had to (wanted to) make a detour to Vinh to pick up some food comforts from the Big C (that’s right I’m famous over here!!) supermarket.  So it was back out to the main highway today.

I was just impressed what this lady biking with. I thought I had enough stuff!
My lunch stop today, you guessed it, was Pho Bo! And they did some other dishes so I had seconds of beef and rice awesome.  I was asked / Hey! and Oi!’ed to join a table for a beer.  Man I’m thinking Vietnam might have a drinking problem.  Everywhere people down about a dozen or more bottles of beer between 4 or 5 of them for lunch every day and maybe a cheeky rice wine or vodka too.  And I always seemed to be pulled in to join.  What’s funny is that they can say hello in English then the rest of the time it’s all Vietnamese.  They talk and ask me stuff and I have absolutely no idea what they are saying.  Smile and say no Vietnamese, then they talk to me again, get a bit louder and repeat what they say.  Doesn’t really make any difference.

Big C Supercentre.  Oh yea some good luxuries in there! Biscuits, OJ, chocolate, KFC mmmm so much cholesterol.  7pm the place is quiet, kind of thought it was just getting close to close not unusual.  Made a second trip down a 8:30 / 9pm and the place going MENTAL.  In the supermarket the bakery section was off the hook.  A crowd was gathered around the counter and as soon as the baker emptied a tray of frenchsticks they went wild.  Hilarious to watch, I have never seen so many people soooo keen to get a frenchstick.

  2. I joined in with some of the battles today in Hue. It was funny. One mum and daughter had two baskets full of them and snatched up whole bunches when the baker took fresh off the racks - greedy!
